HTC Desire review – apps, multimedia, software
18.03.10
Although the Android Market is the second most populated mobile app store around, with a five-figure sum of apps available, it seems to have had little thought put into its navigation. You have to rely on simple searches to find out what you want, while paid-for apps are charged in different currencies across the Market. This is no fault of the HTC Desire , whose touchscreen does a sterling job of letting you pick between the options Google lays at your finger tips, but it’s still a stumbling block.
Fingers crossed Google will sort out its Android Market this year.
With a bit of patience, you can find all sorts of gems hidden within the Android Market. We installed a video player on the Desire to see what sort of multimedia punishment it could take using the internet standard divx format. The results wiped off the cringe that surfing the Android Market caused.
The HTC Desire can hack 720p HD divx files , and while the phone’s screen doesn’t offer quite enough pixels to make the most of them – or an HDMI output to send the video to your TV – it’s an impressive processing feat. Got a video on your PC? As long as it’s not 1080p or an odd format, the HTC Desire can probably handle it with the right app. It’s just a pity that there’s not a gleaming full media player included.
