HTC Legend review – apps, multimedia, software
18.03.10
The Android Market isn’t anywhere near as big as the Apple App Store, but there’s a lot of good stuff on there. And a lot of it’s free. Within a few minutes we found a half-decent divx player with a quick rummage through the Market with the search function. The Legend doesn’t cope with 720p video playback all that well, but standard definition video plays perfectly – and looks great.
Google has looser reins on the Android Market than Apple has on the App Store, which has led to a lot of apps appearing on the Market that would be rejected from the App Store. Unfortunately, finding them is almost always tinged with pain because the Market itself can be a nightmare to navigate through. It’s a lot less friendly than both the BlackBerry App World and the Apple App Store .
The goods are there, but you’ll need patience to find them. If the HTC Legend came with a few more built-in media capabilities, we’d toy with the idea of giving it full marks on the app front. Sadly, it doesn’t. Plus, Android 2.1 only lets you install apps to the internal phone memory – which amounts to hundreds of megabytes, not gigabytes. These annoying setbacks hold the HTC Legend back from appular greatness, but it’s not far off.
